Overview

Advances in healthcare technology show great potential to improve the delivery and stem the rising costs of healthcare. However, the rapid development and hasty adoption of new technologies combined with a complicated regulatory environment has resulted in a landscape replete with interoperability, safety, and security problems.

HealthTech, née HealthSec, is broadening its scope to encourage the development of new technologies that generally improve the quality and safety of healthcare, as well as the access to it. By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and industrial partners, HealthTech aims to provide a forum for cross-disciplinary interactions among the technology, medicine, and policy communities.  The HealthTech ’13 Program Committee invites authors to submit original, full-length technical papers that broadly concern health information technology.

New this year, HealthTech will include a poster session, inviting those in industry, practitioners, and academics to share their experiences with deployment, outcomes, and unintended consequences. We also welcome preliminary work that shows potential to stimulate or catalyze further research and explores new directions—surprising results and thought-provoking ideas will be strongly favored.

Also new this year will be the awarding of a community-wide Outstanding Paper Award, conferred upon the authors of the best research paper, published within the last five years, to advance the safety, security, privacy, or interoperability of health information technology, as judged by the nominations committee. Nominations of previously published papers from any peer-reviewed venue will be considered. Papers authored by the program chairs are not eligible for consideration. More information about the nomination process will appear on the HealthTech ’13 Web site.

Lastly, we will continue last year’s lively rump session for announcements of research in progress.

The format of this single-day workshop will be presentations by the authors of full-length papers, augmented by breakout discussion groups, expert panels, a poster session, and a keynote address. Papers will be published on the USENIX Web site. More information regarding the workshop can be found at the Health Tech 2013 website.

2012 papers can be found at the USENIX HealthSec ’12 website.
